Dollar Curtains & Blinds have added the final touches to complete this new home's contemporary and cutting edge design.

The window coverings in this home situated in Mt Martha, Victoria, have been designed and installed by Dollar Curtains & Blinds Mornington team. Sheer curtains, suncreen roller blinds, blockout roller blinds and blockout curtains were all chosen and co-ordinated to finish off the interior design of this home on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula.

Sheer Curtains and Sunscreen Roller Blinds Ideas for Living Room

The combination of sheer curtains and sunscreen roller blinds is key to the success of this home’s interior design. In the living spaces, the sheers add softness and bring a sense of relaxation to the room whilst the sunscreen roller blinds aid the insulation and privacy. Both ensure the clients keep their beautiful water views whilst maintaining their privacy.

From the entry of the home sheer curtains frame the antique doors and the pencil pleat curtain heading gathers the fabric from the ceiling with a soft informal drape.

For the sunscreen roller blinds, the dcb designers Tempo View fabric was an essential choice. Tempo View offers UV protection, glare reduction and heat control, insulating the rooms to keep them cool in summer and warm in winter. In addition to its insulation qualities, the fabric also protects the home’s floorboards, carpet and furniture from fading.

The indirect and diffused light created through layered window treatments is essential in creating a relaxed mood. Through the kitchen and dining space, the sheer curtains add movement and allow for natural light and soft breezes into the room, creating a resort ambiance style.

Adding texture really matters in the success of a home’s window treatments and it’s applied here in the form of the finely woven sheer curtain fabrics and sunscreen blind fabrics.

In the dining area, heavy lined drapes were chosen for privacy from the side of the house to ensure complete block out and added insulation.

Dollar Curtains & Blinds Wavefold curtain heading was selected throughout the home in the living and dining rooms and master suite to create a consistent look across all rooms.

The Wavefold creates a sleek and contemporary effect when used with both sheer and solid fabrics, allowing the curtains to drape with a continuous wave, which is smooth, simple and elegant.

As well as complementing the aesthetics of this modern home, the Wavefold is also a highly practical choice. The style is easy to operate and creates a neat stack back, which allows the clients to maximize the natural light entering through the windows and leaving them with minimal obstruction to their views.

Dollar Curtains & Blinds have fulfilled the brief of delivering a master suite that is the client’s private sanctuary with the tonal hues and soft drape of the St Tropez sheer fabric.

Sheer Curtains and Blockout Roller Blinds Ideas for Bedroom

The combination of sheer curtains and blockout roller blinds provides the functionality for complete control over the room’s natural light. Opting for a blockout fabric in a roller blind provides the room darkening, privacy and insulation required for the bedroom. Together these components have created a haven the clients love to enter at the end of the day and wake up to each morning.

Infused with contemporary style, the combination of plantation shutters and sheer curtains creates the ultimate refined look for this modern canberra home.

Given the abundance of sunlight flooding the home, plantation shutters were the ideal choice. The real beauty of shutters is you can tilt the easy to use louvers to any position, giving you complete light control.

With the windows facing the east, protecting the inside of the home from the harsh sunlight was also a must, so dcb designs Basswood shutters were chosen. Constructed from premium Basswood timber, the shutters offer high insulation properties, and are also tested to endure the harshest temperatures of the Australian sun.

Ensuring light control, the DCB designs shutters were also installed for their UV protection. In the bay window the shutters louvres are easily adjustable to re-direct the light away from the upholstered seating to prevent fading to the furniture.

Dollar Curtains & Blinds has also installed the shutters with no corner gaps, allowing for complete protection from UV damage. The shutters’ small projection also proves ideal in this space, and in the hallways, ensuring the window coverings intrude as little as possible into the interiors.

Plantation shutters are highly functional when used on doorways. Shutters are fixed to the doors, allowing no interference when the doors are opened and closed.

Dollar Curtains & Blinds has also designed the shutters with cutouts, allowing for the shutters to be installed alongside the handles on the French doors.

Introducing tactile sheer curtains in the main living areas softens the architectural look of the shutters, creating calming and inviting spaces. The curtains were designed with a triple pinch pleat heading, creating a classic, timeless look, and the décor rods tie in with the door handles and light fittings, ensuring a consistent style throughout the home.

Material Benefits

Choosing a fabric that will bring your interior to life is an art itself. Charles Parsons shares some great selection tips.

Tip 1 Style and Setting

Is it a casual setting where you can use fun colours or trendy prints? Or a formal setting with more traditional patterns, or a muted colour palette? Is the look modern or contemporary? Think about the way you want the setting to look, and ensure it will fit in with other furnishings already in the room. If you want to embrace the latest fashions, make sure it is something that you truly like and can live with for years to come, long after the trend has passed!

Tip 2 Adding Depth and Proportion

You can’t change the size of the room, but you can change the perceived dimensions of the space with cleverly applied colours and patterns.

Drapery stripes tend to be vertical as they draw the eye up, creating the illusion of height and space.

In small rooms, you can make the space appear bigger by using lighter fabrics to make the walls appear to recede. Dark colours absorb light, making a room seem cramped and can give the impression that the room is closing in on you. Choose large-scale patterns as smaller ones can be chaotic in a small room.

If you have an oddly proportioned room, one option is to create an illusion of depth on one wall by using colour. Keeping the other walls neutral, decorate the last wall in a deeper contrasting colour and colour block with plain or textured drapery to give the impression that the wall is further away than it really is.

Tip 3 Pattern Scales

When you’re choosing a pattern, consider the size of the design. Small curtains or blinds won’t show the full potential of a fabric with a large pattern. Similarly, a large curtain in a small-scale design can look busy and fussy.

Mix and match different patterns in the same room. The key to contrasting patterns is to ensure each pattern is a different scale. This prevents patterns from blending into each other and making the room look confused; the eye has trouble distinguishing between them at first glance.

Tip 4 Colour

Colour can change the whole mood of a room. You want to match the weight of the colour to the rest of the room. An electric blue curtain is going to look mighty out of place in a setting decorated in soft pastels, even if the rest of the room is blue! Different colours can work very well together if they are the same weight. Alternatively, a feature piece in a strikingly different weight can have real impact.

Also consider whether you want your furniture in cool or warm tones. Warm tones have an undercurrent of yellow, orange or red, making you think of sunlight and heat. Warm colours bring items closer and create a sense of intimacy and comfort. Cool colours create a sense of space and depth, and tend to have a hint of blue or stark white - it has nothing to do with whether the fabric shade is light or dark. You don’t necessarily need to create a whole room in one tone though. Statement pieces in a contrasting tone bring a welcoming sense of balance to a room.

fabric selection tips

PICK YOUR QUALITY

Our association with Dollar curtains started over 20 years ago. Like Dollar Curtains & Blinds, quality for Maurice Kain is paramount. Three full time QA staff are part of our commitment to quality. All our ranges must meet very stringent criteria. Our in house testing laboratory ensuresno product is released to the market without passing all applicable tests. We look after the quality side of the equation for you.

PICK YOUR COLOUR

When developing new drapery collections, we take into consideration the direction paint and flooring colours are taking and ensure our colourations are working together. If you are starting with a bare room or existing colours, walls and floors are a perfect place to start. Colour takes on what we call “hue” which can be green / red / blue for example, so a great decorating tip is to collect your paint chips, flooring samples and drapery swatches so they overlap each other. This will ensure your “hues” are compatible. Dollar Curtains & Blinds expertly trained consultants are also on hand to help you put that together.

PICK YOUR DESIGN

Florals, stripes, leaves, scrolls, geometrics, or textures, this is where you can make your own personal statement and a true reflection of yourself. Consider the space you are decorating - living, bedroom , dining – it can be as bold or subdued as you like. It is also where you can add tremendous value to your home and create that “wow factor.”

PICK YOUR ENERGY-EFFICIENT SOLUTION

With ever increasing energy bills – correctly installed drapes can significantly reduce your heating costs. This simple diagram explains where the heat is lost and how it can be reduced. Incorporating a quality lining with your drapes also helps with energy efficiency, significantly reducing not only the heat loss during the winter, but repelling the heat during the summer. From the infrared imaging of a typical home it is easy to see where the heat is lost.

Effortless Elegance

Danielle Crosby - Friday, February 26, 2016

...

When it comes to impact, warm textured fabrics, elegant shapes and luxe embellishments adorn the windows in each room to transfor this home.

In this Melbourne home, Dollar Curtains & Blinds designed and installed drapes, sheer curtains, roman blinds, sunscreen roller blinds, plantation shutters and custom window seat cushions. Situated in Wonga Park, the DCB team has truly put the finishing touches on this amazing family home.

Elegant Curtain Ideas for Your Living Room

The main living room, curtains were the ideal choice to ensure the best possible insulation with so much glass. The long length drapes further accentuate the dramatic effect of the two story high windows. Dollar Curtains & Blinds have installed the curtains higher above the windows and designed them to hang gathered on the floor so that the curtains keep in proportion to the large expanses of glass and further increase the height of the windows. This also ensures the curtains fall beautifully and adds an extra sense of grandeur. The five metre length drapes have a luxurious formal appearance with our goblet curtain heading and button embellishments. The tiebacks frame the large scale windows and were intentionally made to fit tighter than usual so more of a ballooning effect is achieved when holding the drapes to the sides.

Consistency has been maintained throughout the home in the fabrics, decorative poles and hold backs to ensure there is a link between each room across the two levels. Elegant hold backs have been mounted to the walls and work to fit the drapes elegantly in place and tie in with the poles, given the windows’ long drops. The simplicity of soft roman blinds was combined with the fresh softness of sheer curtains in the guest bedrooms, walk-in robe and bathroom. To ensure a complete block out and maximise insulation benefits the blinds were lined and installed outside the recess of the windows. White sheers layered across the roman blinds glisten in the sun with our knife pleat curtain heading adding a modern and tailored look, and allowing a flat finish when the curtains are drawn closed. The sheers also add privacy during the day when the blinds are drawn open to let light into the rooms.

Curtain Ideas for Formal Living and Dining Rooms

In the formal living and dining rooms, curtains were designed with a reverse pleat heading, which creates a tailored appearance hanging below decorative rods. Flat Austrians were chosen for the formal living room to add a decorative finish, designed with a small amount of gather due to the closeness of the three large windows.

Adding lining was an essential element when designing the home’s window coverings. The Dollar Curtains & Blinds lining used provides insulation for the home, trapping the heat in during winter and blocking it out in summer, and assists in reducing outside noise. The lining also protects the fabrics from fading or deteriorating from sun damage, extending the life of the window coverings and allowing the clients to capitalise on their investment.

In addition to all of these practical benefits, our lining also added aesthetic benefits. Backing the curtains with lining creates an improved drape with increased fullness allowing for a luxurious finish. All the different window coverings were also lined with the same type and colour lining to ensure uniformity to the exterior appearance of the home while allowing a broad choice of textures, weaves and colours for the interior.

In the ensuite, the clients wanted to take advantage of the high windows and allow as much natural light to filter into the room as possible, as well as ensure the beautiful bush views weren’t obstructed. To meet the brief, we have installed our plantation shutters only across the bottom half of the window panes. This ensures privacy for the bathroom when in use with the adjustable panels but allows light to stream through the top windows and keep the bush views.
