“The Sheer Curtains transformed our clients holiday home by softening the modern lines + adding a coastal, breezy feel that was essential for the overall design. ”

We caught up with Jessica Dwyer (owner) + Holly Briggles (Lead Stylist) of Right At Home Staging, to discuss their recent project — a stunning transformation of a 26-year-old property on the Sapphire Coast of New South Wales. Now a beautifully designed holiday home!

Tell us a little bit about yourself as a designer.

We’re Jessica and Holly from Right At Home Staging, based on the stunning Sapphire Coast of New South Wales. Our passion is turning spaces into stories, helping our clients bring their vision to life. Specialising in real estate sales and Airbnb properties, we pride ourselves on creating thoughtful, liveable designs that balance beauty and practicality.

What type of home did you renovate – describe the style/design?

Our clients purchased ‘A Short Time at Short St‘ in Merimbula and commenced a complete renovation on the 26 year old property. A Short Time was designed with a clean, modern aesthetic that embraces coastal elements, reflecting the seaside town’s atmosphere, including the addition of a large deck overlooking Merimbula Lake.

What made your clients want to renovate their home?

Our clients purchased the property as their personal holiday home, with plans to rent it out as a holiday accommodation rental when not in use by them. Due to the property’s age, it required significant renovations to bring it up to modern standards.

Tell us about the planning process, about choosing your trades, and how you went about it?

Our clients took the lead on the renovation, choosing their preferred trades for the project. However, we recommended dollar curtains + blinds, as we do with all of our clients. While our clients selected the furniture, we concentrated on sourcing the perfect soft furnishings to compliment the pieces and bring the entire design together – ensuring a cohesive and harmonious look.

What were the ‘must-haves’ for the renovation?

  1. It was essential to maintain the modern lines while infusing a coastal vibe, so elements like Sheer Curtains, textured cushions, and light, natural materials were must-haves!

What lesson(s) have you learnt while renovating?

  1. Flexibility is key. While having a clear vision is important, being open to adjustments along the way can lead to even better outcomes.

What’s your favourite room in the renovation and why?

  1. The primary bedroom is our favourite, as it perfectly captures the balance of modern design and coastal comfort, making it a welcoming space for guests.

When did you contact us during the process and what benefits did dc+b provide?

  1. We contacted dollar curtains + blinds early in the process to ensure that the window furnishings would align with the overall design from the beginning. In fact, Brad from our local dc+b Merimbula store met us on site the day our clients were handed the keys to the property.

Was it beneficial to visit dc+b in-store?

  1. Visiting in-store is always extremely beneficial! Seeing and feeling the fabrics in person helped in making the right choice for the space.

  1. Did you originally know what you were after in terms of window coverings or were you seeking our advice?

  1. We generally know what we are after, but our local store is always a good sounding board on our ideas and if they are possible.

When it comes to designing a home, what does your design process look like?

  1. Our design process begins with gaining a clear understanding of the client’s vision and the purpose of the space. We then take precise measurements and create a design that balances functionality and beauty, ensuring every element has a meaningful role. When designing for a holiday rental, we approach it differently than we would for a client’s personal home, taking into account unique factors such as durability, guest experience, and ease of maintenance.

What are your top 3 design/style tips for renovating a house?

  1. 1. Prioritise quality over quantity and invest in key pieces.
  2. 2. Use a neutral base with pops of colour and texture.
  3. 3. Consider the flow of the space and how each room connects.

How did you find the measure + install service?

  1. As always, Brad and his team from the Merimbula store’s service was seamless! With expert advice that ensured the Curtains fit perfectly and practically for the space.

What products did you choose from dc+b?

We chose Sheer Curtains that added a soft, airy feel to the space, allowing natural light to filter through while providing privacy during the day, with the addition of Blockout Roller Blinds and Vertical Blinds.

How did our products transform the home?

  1. The Sheer Curtains transformed the home by softening the modern lines and adding a coastal, breezy feel that was essential for the overall design. Adding the Blinds to the home added practicality, by enabling complete light control.

You’re given a limited renovation budget; how would you spend it wisely to transform a home?

  1. To make the most of a limited renovation budget, prioritise updating key areas that will have the biggest impact, such as the kitchen and living room. Invest in high-impact changes like modernising the lighting, refreshing the window treatments, and adding thoughtfully chosen accessories. These updates can significantly enhance the overall look and feel of the home, making it more inviting and functional.

What are the 3 most important things that make your home feel like a home?

  1. 1. Personal touches like artwork and family photos.
  1. 2. Comfortable and inviting furniture.
  2. 3. Thoughtful lighting to create ambiance

  1. How do you find inspiration?

  1. Our inspiration comes from everywhere – nature, art, social media and even the architecture of the space itself. Traveling also provides endless ideas!

What’s on your interiors wish list right now?

  1. Right now, we are loving handcrafted pieces that add a personal touch to a space, like custom ceramics and artisanal textiles.

What qualities do you look for when choosing material, furniture and accessories in your designs?

  1. We look for durability, timeless style, and how well they fit into the overall design. It’s important that everything feels cohesive.

Are you a Curtains, Blinds or Shutters person?

We are big Sheer Curtain fans for their versatility and ability to soften a space.

Some people find it difficult to decide what to do with their windows. Any tips?

  1. Start by considering the function of the room. For living and bedroom spaces we love using Sheer Curtains that let in natural light while providing privacy.
