We catch up with Kimmy Hogan — artist and mother of three boys, as she shares her home featuring our Sheer Curtains and motorised Roller Blinds. Known for her free-flowing botanical artworks, Kimmy’s dreamy aesthestic has captured hearts of art lovers across Australia and beyond.

Three words that best describe you?
Warm, funny, creative.

What’s your ideal day?
A lazy morning in bed with the kids, a family outing amongst nature, cooking in the afternoon and having friends over for dinner and drinks in the evening.

What is your most cherished possession?
My wedding ring and other irreplaceable jewellery pieces which hold great sentimental value.

What’s your favourite colour?
Pink, of course!

Do you live in a house or apartment?
House

What’s your favourite room and why?
Our master bedroom is definitely my favourite. We recently renovated and created a master suite in the entirely new second level – it’s so spacious and filled with natural light. It’s like a sanctuary!

What are the 3 most important things that make your home feel like a home?
1.
Clutter of collected art and decor

2. A warm palette

3. Plenty of natural light

What was your biggest splurge when designing your home?
The tiles. We chose some gorgeous handmade zellige tiles which are all unique and imperfect. I felt it was a great investment as they give the home such character and quirk, and will age well and never go out of style.

“For our home, we opted for Sheer Curtains with a beautiful linen look in a natural tone, bringing a warm + inviting feel to our space. The bold, black Curtain Rods add a touch of European elegance, completing the look.”

What lesson(s) did you learn when you designed your home?
Don’t listen to what everyone else is telling you to do – stick to your vision. If someone says it can’t be done, show them your inspo and insist on what you want.

What’s on your interiors wish list right now?
A low cloud-like sofa or chaise to complete our master bedroom.

What’s your interior style? Minimalist, over the top or somewhere in between? Colourful or neutral?
I would call my interior style “considered yet character-filled”. We have an eclectic mix of old and new furniture, ceramics, artworks and textures throughout the home but it all works in harmony with a neutral palette and hints of pink and mustard throughout. There are also designated areas for beautiful clutter (like my shelves with collected ceramics) but also areas of space for relief for the eye.

When it comes to designing a home, what does your design process look like?
The design process involved Pinterest, Instagram and magazine references. Then I scoured local offerings to achieve the look and overall vibe I was trying to create. I also did a lot of to-scale floor plan and elevation drawings to see how different surfaces, colours and configurations worked together. Through this we avoided a few big errors so were super glad to have gone to the effort!

What qualities do you look for when choosing materials, furniture, and accessories in your designs?
For us, we looked for hard-wearing and long-lasting pieces. We are a family of five and we have three boys to raise in this home – I don’t want to be precious living here. We want to let life happen here and have surfaces and furniture pieces that will age well around us.

You’re given a limited renovation budget; how would you spend it wisely to transform a home?
Paint will completely transform a home with the least amount of money. I would also scour Facebook Marketplace for second hand furniture which will add instant character to your home. I would invest most of the budget into the hard surfaces which you won’t update often – like tiles, stone or flooring.

Are you a Curtains, Blinds or Shutters person?
I love big, drapey, romantic Curtains – but Blinds are a necessity!

What products did you choose from dollar curtains + blinds?
We chose linen-look Sheer Curtains in a lovely natural tone which has added so much warmth to our space. The thick black Curtain Rods have a European feel and we used these throughout for consistency. We also splurged on the remote controlled motorised Blinds for our master upstairs so we can pop them up and stay in bed when we are enjoying a lazy weekend morning!

“Our motorised Blockout Roller Blinds are very practical, whilst our Sheers are so beautiful + add so much warmth + life to the space. They completely transform a boring room into something luxurious + warm.”

— Kimmy Hogan

How did our products transform your home?
Our Curtains are what made our house a home. They have turned a bare room into a space that feels cosy, homely and warm.

Some people find it difficult to decide what to do with their windows. Any tips?

You need to tick off the practical requirements but don’t overlook the aesthetic. Our motorised Blockout Roller Blinds are very practical, but our Sheer Curtains are so beautiful and add so much warmth and life to the space. They completely transform a boring room into something luxurious and warm.

How do you find inspiration?
Magazines, Pinterest and Instagram. I love following interior designers and stylists locally and overseas who like to think outside the box. I especially love finding inspiration in vintage photos or photos of faraway places which I then deconstruct to understand the ingredients that make it beautiful.

What design project(s) are you working on at the moment?

I just launched my Vaza collection which was inspired by our renovation project – I loved the irregular, imperfect tiles we used and through that a new collection was born. I’m now having a pause between collections to allow the mind to rest and let the next wave of inspiration come my way.
