Our clients came to us with their holiday home already designed, with a clear vision in mind. The original home in Cape Paterson held deep sentimental value for them, as its where they’ve spent family holidays together by the ocean. Their hope is for the home to remain in the family for generations to come, creating lasting memories and continuing its legacy as a cherished coastal retreat.
What were the ‘must haves’ in your clients new home?
Our clients must-haves included home automation for modern convenience, which led them to choose dollar curtains + blinds automated window coverings. They also wanted a highly functional kitchen tailored for both daily living and entertaining, along with a plunge pool to embrace the coastal setting and elevate their holiday experience.
What lessons did you learn when building this home?
This project was a valuable learning experience, as it marked our first time incorporating home automation and using cladding as the primary exterior material. Both required careful planning and coordination, expanding our knowledge and skills. It was a great opportunity to explore new materials and technologies, reinforcing the importance of adaptability and attention to detail when working with innovative design features. Personally, I, Lauren, learnt a lot about Automated Curtains and Blinds during this build!
When it comes to designing a home, what does your design process look like?
At Greenform Construction, we get involved from the very start of the design process. Working closely with the draftsman or architect and the client, we provide practical guidance to ensure the design aligns with the client’s vision while staying within budget. We also connect clients with our trusted suppliers and retailers, making the selection process seamless and stress-free.
What qualities do you look for when choosing materials, furniture, and accessories in your designs?
We prioritise sustainability and longevity, choosing materials that not only look great but also stand the test of time. Practicality and ease of maintenance are key, as is suitability for a family home. By balancing style with durability and functionality, we create spaces that are both beautiful and truly liveable.
When did you contact us during the building process and what benefits did dc+b provide?
I worked with dc+b during the quoting phase, with the clients visiting their local store to select materials. From there, we collaborated to ensure each choice complimented the design and function of every space. dc+b offered valuable guidance throughout, helping us confidently select the right Curtains and Blinds for each room.
Did you originally know what you were after in terms of window coverings, or were you seeking our advice?
Our clients had a clear idea of what they wanted for their window coverings. However, during the measure, we were able to finalise everything with a few slight adjustments, thanks to the guidance and expertise from dc+b. Their input really helped refine the selections and ensure the end result was both functional and beautifully suited to the home.
Was it beneficial to visit in-store?
Visiting our local store was incredibly valuable. Seeing and feeling the materials in person allowed us to make confident decisions about textures, colours, and finishes. Working face-to-face also made communication clearer and the selection process far more collaborative than over phone or email.
What products did you and your clients select from dc+b?
The ground floor is fully automated, accessible via the innovative Pulse PRO through the dc+b app, and features a combination of Sheer Curtains and Blockout Roller Blinds that are neatly tucked into a recessed bulkhead. In the main living area, our clients chose Sheer Curtains in Kokomo colour Sky, paired with Blockout Roller Blinds in Logan, colour Mineral.
The master bedroom features Double Curtains, with Sheer Curtains in Homestead colour Talc, layered with Blockout Curtains in Utopia, colour Tropical. Upstairs, the bedrooms have Sheer Curtains in Homestead colour Talc, combined with Blockout Roller Blinds in Logan colour Mineral. In the rumpus room and hallway, Double Roller Blinds were installed, pairing Logan Blockout with Sheer Roller Blinds in Maui colour Bianca, adding privacy while still allowing natural light to filter through.
How did you find the measure + install service?
The measure + install service was excellent. dc+b brought all the selected materials on-site and laid them out, allowing our clients to see everything in the space, which was incredibly helpful. The process was efficient and valuable, and having the clients present ensured everyone was confident and happy with the final selections.
Are you a Curtains, Blinds or Shutters person?
I’m definitely a Curtains person! I absolutely love the softness and elegance that they bring to a space. To be honest, I love all window coverings but if I had to choose one, it would be a recessed Pelmet with beautiful Double Curtains.
How have our products transformed your clients home?
The Curtains bring an added touch of luxury to this already high-end holiday retreat. With Automation, the home offers not only convenience and ease of use but also a warm, inviting atmosphere that makes it feel truly comfortable.
What are your top 3 design/style tips for building a home?
2. Listen to your clients needs and vision. Understanding how the home will be used, whether its a forever home or a holiday retreat is key to designing a space that works. Every family and lifestyle is different!
3. Choose high quality, sustainable materials. Its important to not just consider the look of your selections, but how well they will perform over time. We always encourage clients to choose materials that are durable, environmentally conscious, and built to stand the test of time.
How do you find inspiration?
My inspiration for builds comes from Pinterest, Instagram, and design blogs. I can easily get lost for hours exploring ideas and trends when the kids have gone to bed. I love every aspect of design and enjoy discovering different styles, as it allows me to continually grow and adapt. Learning about a variety of styles means I can better support our clients, helping them create a home that truly reflects their vision, no matter what their personal taste might be.
You’re given a limited renovation budget. How would you spend it wisely to transform a home?
We would focus on the areas that make the biggest impact and are the most used areas, like the main living spaces and kitchen. Investing in key elements like cabinetry and stone bench tops can truly transform the feel of a home.
At the same time, its important to be smart with material choices in areas. Its all about balance, choosing where to spend and where to save while still achieving a high quality result.
Some people find it difficult to decide what to do with their windows. Any tips?
When it comes to choosing window coverings, I think the most important thing to begin with is functionality. Consider who will be using the room – is it a kids space or an adults retreat? Think about what you need from the window covering – do you want full blockout for sleeping, or just privacy while letting in natural light? If you’re working within a budget, prioritise where you want to create impact. Often the main living areas are where you can really add that ‘wow’ factor.
Also, think about how you want to mount your Curtains. Mounting from the ceiling can create a beautiful, seamless look and can make the room feel taller and more refined. Its a small detail that can make a big difference in the overall design.
