Archipro X Resene.

At the end of 2020, New Zealand Specification website ArchiPro surveyed their talented membership base of design professionals to get their insight on what colours would dominate 2021, as part of the inaugural Resene x ArchiPro 2021 Colour Forecast.

The newly released results saw a common theme of nature-inspired shades that complement the natural materials we see increasingly in our Australasian homes right now. Top colours were selected based on room type.

Best Living Room Colour: Resene Family Tree

It’s an earthy green tone, which imitates nature and gives a sense of connection with outdoors, transcending that connection between interior and exterior.

Best Bedroom Colour: Resene Duck Egg Blue

This dreamy blue has a calming quality and is a departure from some of the bolder colours preferred in bedrooms in recent years.

Best Neutral: Resene Elderflower

A slightly yellow-cream based white, with a bit of freshness to it.  Moving away from the grey and beige based whites.

Best Exterior Colour: Resene Charcoal

A deep and recessive shade that creates a dramatic effect when used outdoors – both on walls and landscaping elements.

And, from a wider perspective we can look to prominent global and well-known sources, where we see forecasts of blues, greens and yellows as popular choices and attesting to the notion that the colour palette of our natural environment is ever so relevant, wherever you live in the world.

“Colour is emotive and plays a large part in our general happiness so by choosing a palette wisely for wall colour and home textiles, we can aim to create a retreat-like feel for our family to enjoy. ”

Benjamin Moore Paints.

From the US, Benjamin Moore’s annual celebration of colour is the result of a yearlong exploration into design, art, fashion, cultural and environmental influences around the globe. From Benjamin Moore’s library of over 3,500 colours, they carefully curate a Colour Trends palette that balances modern-day relevance with long-lasting appeal. At the centre is one special hue that defines the palette—and the moment: the Colour of the Year.

Intriguing, balanced, and deeply soothing, the Benjamin Moore Colour of the Year 2021, Aegean Teal 2136-40, creates natural harmony.

Aegean Teal sits alongside a wider range of twelve hues in the palette that radiate warmth and wellbeing. These are colours that make your home feel even more like home.

Sherwin-Williams.

Sherwin-Williams’ global colour and design team research and identify key trends that influence the way we interact with colour. From those findings, the team turns emerging themes into the annual Colourmix Forecast and zeros in on a Colour of the Year. The 2021 selection:

A warm, sophisticated bronze, the colour inspires all of us to find sanctuary in any space. Urbane Bronze is a rich anchor that grounds the mind in calm and stability with its ties to the natural world.

WGSN.

WGSN is a useful resource for the textile (and any design) industry where they showcase any changes that will affect consumers behaviours. The WGSN experts connect the dots to accurately predict the products, experiences and services people will need in years to come, helping brands stay relevant.  So, it would be remiss not to include the colours they too are forecasting:

In summary, we can see that there is a preference coming through for warmth and comfort in our colour choices with the aim of bringing nature inspired hues back into the home, whether that be through browns shades, greens or blues, replicating our outdoor landscape.

Colour is emotive and plays a large part in our general happiness so by choosing a palette wisely for wall colour and home textiles, we can aim to create a retreat-like feel for our family to enjoy.
