“The consult, measure + installation process was a breeze. The Interior Consultant who came to measure was very thorough + friendly. She was patient + went through every detail, we didn't feel rushed at all. ”

— Talia, Frankston.

  1. Tell us a little bit about yourself and where you live.
  2. We’re Talia and Matt – a couple who adore their German Pointer Charlie, the gym, travelling, food, and have a special love for homes and interiors. We finished our renovation here along the Mornington Peninsula in 2023.

  1. What type of home did you build – describe the style/design?

We renovated a liveable but outdated weatherboard house. The outside has been kept the same with a few updates, however we have fully renovated the inside, using a Scandi-Coastal style.

What made you want to renovate your home?

This is our third house we have renovated together. We enjoy it and the outcome that comes with it. It helps when Matt has his own building business!

Did you look through any display homes for inspiration?

No we didn’t! Pinterest and Instagram were our go-to.

    1. Tell us about the planning process about choosing your trades and how you went about it.
  1. We’re pretty lucky that Matt is a builder. In regards to the design aspect, I’ve always loved interior design, and my sister is a designer herself, so she helped a lot.

  1. What did you look for when finding land – location, size etc?
  2. Location was the most important factor for us. We found that the Mornington Peninsula area had decent sized blocks, so it worked out well.

Going into the renovation, where were you able to save money and which areas of the home did you want to splurge on?

We splurged on our kitchen and bathrooms. We were able to save money from Matt doing the renovation himself and having friends who are electricians.

What were the ‘must-haves’ in your new home?

Colour, an airy space, storage, natural light, a big kitchen, new floors, and Nood sinks.

Have you added anything to your home?

  1. We removed a bedroom and added a new laundry, butlers pantry and bathroom.

What lessons did you learn when renovating your own home?

  1. Be patient! The dust and deconstructed living is worth it in the end.

What’s your favourite room and why?

Our favourite room is definitely the kitchen. We have achieved a lot from what it was at the beginning. I love the tiles we picked, and the natural sky light above is a great feature as well.

What are the 3 most important things that make your home feel like a home?

A comfortable lounge room, a clean space and warmth (fireplace, bedding, blankets) and candles. Just somewhere where you want to be all the time!

Did you originally know what you were after in terms of window coverings or were you seeking our advice?

  1. We always knew what we wanted, but the team at dollar curtains + blinds gave us extensive fabric and colour options to choose from!

When did you contact us during the process?

When we had enough of using a bed sheet as a Curtain! Haha.

How did you find the design, measure + install service?

It was a breeze! The dc+b team bought it all to us, we didn’t even have to step foot in store.

What is your most cherished possession?

Definitely the Fenton & Fenton console table and side tables.

“Layering Sheer Curtains with Roller Blinds was a match made in heaven, offering perfect flexibility to adjust light to our preferences.”

— Talia + Matt, Frankston.

What’s on your interiors wish list right now?

A Madrid Mondo Bed and an Artie Buffet table from Globe West. Saving away!

You’re given a limited renovation budget; how would you spend it wisely to transform a home?

Focusing on areas you use most.

What are your top 3 design/style tips for renovating a house?

  1. 1. To get more clarity, visit your closest dc+b store and get advice from the experts.
  2. 2. Opt for quality over quantity any day.
  3. 3. Order your materials in advance, as a shortage of materials can cause delays for rooms to be finished.

What qualities do you look for when choosing materials, furniture and accessories in your designs?

Cheaper products really show. Many of the products in our home were more pricey, but sometimes you have to spend money to make money as well. When choosing our materials, we opted for Australian made products (like dc+b of course!), and the most sustainable options.

Are you a curtains, blinds or shutters person?

Definitely Curtains, especially Sheers! We do like Shutters though, but it really depends on the style of the home and the interior.

Some people find it difficult to decide what to do with their windows. Any tips?

Pick a realistic design that suits the size of your windows.

How do you find inspiration?

Instagram and Pinterest were our (mainly Talia’s) best friends!

“Be patient. The dust and deconstructed living that comes with renovating is worth it. ”

— Talia + Matt, Frankston.

“The Sheer Curtains definitely transformed our home. When the sun shines inside, it makes us proud of the space we've created. It's amazing! ”

— Talia + Matt, Frankston.

“The Blockout Roller Blinds were the practical decision for us, with the ability to block out light at night time for privacy + bring them up to let in the natural sunlight during the day. They help give our home a sleek look.”

— Matt, Frankston.
