Historically, drapery textiles have been limited by the looms they are woven on. Now, there is capacity to weave extra-wide fabrics. This advancement reduces the need to join seams by creating ‘continuous drapery’, which takes nothing away from the ambience of a space and the vistas beyond.

Annie Moir, Design Director at James Dunlop Textiles, introduces us to her favourite wide-width draperies in no particular order.

Kyoto.

Woven in Turkey, Kyoto is a pure linen wide-width drapery, renowned for its quality and elegant, tumbled finish. Yarn-dyed and washable, it has been reimagined in an extensive decorative palette by the James Dunlop studio, ensuring it continues to bring a sense of relaxed luxury to a home.

Laconia Air.

Expertly tumbled with an Airo finish and also woven in Turkey, Laconia Air offers a soft handle and fluid drape. Now refreshed in a contemporary colour palette, this timeless fabric continues to bring effortless elegance for years to come.

Banksia.

Designed to mimic the rich texture of heavy linen while offering the durability of synthetic fibers, Banksia is a wide-width fabric built to endure harsh UV conditions. Woven in India and coloured in a selection of versatile neutrals and bold shades, it provides a practical yet stylish drapery solution for both residential and commercial spaces.

Atrium.

The Atrium fabric print embraces biophilic design, bringing nature indoors with its lush tropical foliage motifs. Delicately painted in watercolour and layered to evoke a flourishing rainforest, this design is digitally printed in Turkey on a Sheer linen base, allowing soft, dappled light to filter through.

“We are deeply connected to our landscapes in Australia and New Zealand. Our lifestyle and interior design sensibility favours expansive windows, high studded ceilings, and open plan living. Our design studio prioritises transitional textiles which focus on tactility and dimension to compliment the view, in a sophisticated yet casual way.”

Antipodes.

Blending the look of linen with the durability of synthetic fibers, Antipodes is a Sheer fabric, perfectly suited to the relaxed antipodean lifestyle. Yarn-dyed for depth and texture, its palette features a thoughtfully curated selection of nature-inspired neutrals and serene pastels. Expertly finished for an irresistibly soft feel and enhanced with a weighted hem, Antipodes offers a seamless transition from coastal retreats to urban living.

Reverie.

Woven in Turkey, Reverie combines the luxurious softness of tumbled linen with the durability of polyester. Piece-dyed in James Dunlop’s signature colour palette, this wide Sheer fabric offers a refined aesthetic and versatile colour options.

Cavalier.

Originally launched in 2011, Cavalier continues to be a very popular drapery. This continuous Sheer fabric, primarily woven from polyester, mimics the look and feel of fine linen while offering the durability needed to endure harsh environmental conditions. Revitalised in the design studio of James Dunlop Textiles, Cavalier’s refreshed palette draws inspiration from nature, elegantly framing the view in any home.

Seaview.

Inspired by sweeping panoramic views where delicate Sheer Curtains frame the landscape, Seaview is woven to a generous width with a weighted selvedge. Yarn-dyed to replicate the texture of linen while offering the durability of polyester, Seaview is crafted by the James Dunlop Studio in a thoughtfully curated palette of sophisticated neutrals and vibrant mid-tones.

Element.

Element is designed for the true textile lover! With its double cloth construction and intricate binding, Element is a rich, complex Semi-Sheer fabric that brings accessible luxury to any space. This reversible, technically advanced fabric boasts intricate colourations, offering a tactile and versatile window treatment with endless decorative possibilities. Woven in Belgium from a primarily synthetic blend with 15% wool, Element offers exceptional dimension and texture while maintaining practicality.
