Drapes vs. Curtains: What's The Difference?

Roxana Pascu - Wednesday, June 27, 2018

...

Do you need drapes for your windows at home, or will curtains do? The first step to figuring out which treatment is right for your windows is to understand the difference between drapes vs. curtains.

When it comes to decorating your house, the smart way to approach it is to find items that merge form with function.

In other words, it should look great, but it also needs to function well in your home.

That includes how you decorate your windows. There's a difference between drapes and curtains. Both have advantages and disadvantages.

The trick is to figure which is better for your needs. To help you out, keep reading to learn whether you should choose drapes vs curtains.

Drapes Vs Curtains

First off, it's important to recognise that anything hung over a window is considered to be a window treatment.

There are various types of window treatments to choose from. And in some cases, you can use more than one type of treatment for a window.

Window treatments are great for several reasons. You can keep out or let in the sun. And you can keep your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter. They also dress up any space.

Drapes

Drapes are made from fabric panels. They typically come in pairs.

Drapes are always lined, sometimes heavily. For that reason, they're often purchased to help block out outside sunlight.

Many people use drapes in living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms. Drapes often hang all the way to the floor and are typically made with stiffer fabrics, including velvet, silk, or damask.

While they come in a variety of styles and colours, most often they are solid rather than heavily patterned. You'll often find that drapes vs curtains are pleated. And there is more than one style of pleat available.

The pleats and the heavier fabric contribute to a more formal appearance in the rooms they're used in. You'll have to hang your drapes from a rod on a hook, grommet, ring, or fabric sleeve.

Drapes with valances are often used together to complete the look of a room. Most choose to match the drapes and valances using the same material and design but it's also possible to mix and match.

Curtains

When comparing curtains vs drapes, there aren't too many differences. But those differences do matter.

Curtains are also fabric panels that are often sold in pairs. However, curtains come in a wide variety of lengths, widths, colours, and patterns.

They are also made with much lighter weight fabrics than drapes. Some of the material used in curtains is extremely sheer.

Sheer curtains are perfect in rooms where you're looking to filter some sunlight but also require natural light in your home.

Curtains work well in every room. In the kitchen, you'll often find curtains and valances used together which is called a cafe curtain.

In the bedroom, it's common to use curtains with blinds or shades to give the room a more fashionable look. Adding curtains will also help to block out more sunlight.

You'll hang the curtains and valances from rods, metal grommets, a fabric sleeve, or metal or fabric rings. In most cases, you can choose to hide the rod or use it as part of the decoration.

Make Your Choice

Whether you choose drapes vs curtains is your choice. Pick whichever one works for your needs.

Add A Touch Of Luxury To Your Bathroom With Custom Made Curtains

Brianna Hatton - Thursday, April 14, 2016

...

Here are some tips from our fabric wholesaler charles parsons interiors on how to add luxury to your bathrooms with our custom made curtains!

Many interior designers specialise in decorating bathrooms for this very purpose, making the zone feel like a relaxing escape from reality by installing lavish bathtubs, hanging soft towels, lighting scented candles and keeping bath salts and petals beside the tub.

But there's another element to completing the look that is often overlooked: designer curtains. Hanging by the window behind the tub, or beside the vanity, your bathroom curtains can bring class, elegance and sophistication to the space to make it feel more like a 'room' instead of an amenity.

Here's some tips for using custom made curtains to do this job.

Use custom made curtains as an accent colour

White is by no means the only hue to use in a bathroom, despite it being one of the most common palettes for a loo. Inject a pop of colour into the neutral tones of white, cream or grey by picking curtain fabric in vibrant hues. Red is a classic exemplar, instantly drawing the eye in towards the tone – try Asina Lychee or Asina Scarlet for a striking maroon and red-tinged fabric.

Echo the curtain colour in other focal points dotted throughout the bathroom, such as decorative objects, towels, rugs, toothbrush and soap stands, or shelving cabinets.

The red accent colour in this minimalist bathroom could be enhanced by red custom made curtains.

Complement the tub with curtain fabric

Spend time on any interior website, be it Elle Decor or Houzz, and you'll notice the trend of enormous tubs propping up. These bathtubs run the gamut from vintage versions with ornate clawed feet contrasting against otherwise sleek, modern bathrooms, or hyper-minimalist ceramic tubs making a statement in contemporary bathrooms lined in shiny marble tiles.

Pick curtains in a complementary style. For example, antique aesthetics can be evoked through floral curtain fabric such as Leathan Mulberry or Althorp Tweed. An alternative is to use Baroque-inspired regal patterns such as Corso Como Steel.

Having said that, don't underestimate the power of a sheer curtain in a warm colour such as orange or red. Light filtering through the fabric will reflect the hue across the bathroom, immersing the space in a whimsical light that creates ambiance and mood. Try Calypso Poppy to achieve this mystical atmosphere in your bathroom. It would look fantastic behind a green potted plant, as the red-and-green complementary colours will naturally offer harmony.

Sheer curtain fabric with a tint, like this red curtain, lets light in but creates a mood too.

Choose curtains that embrace the current organic trend

A leading aesthetic in bathroom design right now is to mesh organic wooden elements with glass, steel and tile. Woven baskets, timber panelling, weathered wood shelves are all considered the creme de la creme of green interior design for bathrooms. Succulents and other indoor plants complete the earthy, natural look.

This style is in many ways influenced by the international drive towards sustainability and valuing green building methods. Not to mention, organic aesthetics are beautiful – indeed, as the father of organic architecture and revered architect Frank Lloyd Wright put it:

"Organic architecture seeks superior sense of use and a finer sense of comfort, expressed in organic simplicity."

It's this raw, natural simplicity that makes the incorporation of wood into bathroom spaces so pleasing. An idyllic way to stay on trend is by evoking the wooden-texture through your choice of curtain fabric. Koby Straw is a richly textured polyester material that fits the bill perfectly.
