CURTAINS

  • Check your Curtains care labels before going ahead with any cleaning.
  • Refer to the ‘Care Instruction Label’ fixed to the rear of your Curtains before laundering them. When getting Curtains cleaned we recommend a Professional Curtain Cleaner.
  • Keep your drapes dust-free by regular gentle vacuuming with the appropriate soft vacuum attachment. Removing dust from the folds and headings will help stop grit from corroding the fabric.
  • Do not open or close the Curtains by hand as dirty hands can soil the fabric. Ensure the draw cord is used.
  • If there are any marks on the Curtain they can be spot washed either with a ‘spotter’ or a damp cloth. Before spot cleaning the Curtain ensure you test this on an unseen part of the drape to confirm that it will not leave a water mark. Ensure the fabric is dried immediately after spot cleaning to avoid any water marks.

BLINDS

  • Check your Blinds care labels before going ahead with any cleaning.
  • Blinds should be dusted and gently wiped, over the front of the fabric, once a month to help avoid any harsh cleaning.
  • Plasticised materials and Sunscreen Blind fabrics can be wiped down with warm soapy water or mild detergents. However do not vigorously rub the fabric as that will cause it to damage.
  • Flock-back Blind fabrics must be treated more carefully. Do not leave them wet or use any type of cleaner on them. Try and remove any marks from the front of the fabric by using a wrung out cloth and gently tease at the spot. However please be aware that spot cleaning with too much pressure can cause water marks on the fabric.

SHUTTERS

  • Shutters should be dusted regularly and can be wiped down with a damp soft cloth.
  • Do not use abrasive cleaners or any scourers as this will damage the finish of the timber.

AWNINGS

  • Do not scrub the fabric or use harsh soaps, detergents, solvents, other liquid cleansers or any bleaches.
  • Immediately remove dirty marks and mildew by first softly brushing and then hosing off well with cold water.

Curtains play an important role in a room’s colour scheme, ambience, and overall mood. Choosing the right curtains for your home requires looking at the practical as well as aesthetical aspects. Homeowners often think about important things such as colours, privacy, warmth, and even energy-saving.

But with the overwhelming amount of options to choose from these days, we’ll make it easier for you to decide with some handy tips and things to look at.

    Fabric

Fabric is an important factor in the appearance of the drapes, and in turn, the room itself. Think about how you want the ambience and décor of the room to be, and see if the fabric choice aligns with that vision. Most interior decorators choose heavier fabrics for more traditional looking rooms, and opt for sheer fabrics for minimalistic and small-sized rooms.

Another important thing to consider is the amount of sunlight you want streaming in. Usually, drapery-weight fabrics are woven tightly and thus carry enough weight for decent sun protection. For homeowners who are looking to be energy-efficient and looking to cut down cooling bills, this can be the path to opt. And it makes all the bit more sense with summer temperatures nudging up every year.

    Colour

When going for the ideal colour of curtains, think about whether you want them to be in sync with the rest of the décor in the room, or warrant their own focus and attention.

If you want the curtains to have a subtler presence, the colour should complement that of the wall and furnishings in the room, for example ivory shades to go with a white background. Conversely, curtains in bold colours will stand out in contrast to the surrounds, adding a bit of spice to the space.

Also, lighter colours will brighten up with natural light and give that breezy feel, while darker shades will appear a bit more grounding. Whichever route you decide to go, pick the shade that you will love to see every time you walk in to your room.

    Additional Factors

In terms of design, if your room consists of patterned furnishings and bedding, solid colours on the curtains can complement the theme by smoothing things out. Conversely, for solid coloured furnishings, curtains with patterns or print can infuse a touch of glamour into the setting.

In terms of length, the ongoing trend is of curtains dropping exactly to the floor level. For a more dramatic ambience, especially with heavier fabric, you can have the drapes extend onto the floor by a few inches. Once you’ve had the perfect drapes to suit your room, take appropriate care like keeping them dust-free with regular and gentle vacuuming. If you do end up getting a spot on them, wash it off either with a “spotter” or a damp cloth. Ensure that the fabric is dried immediately after cleaning to avoid leaving any water marks.

Can window COVERINGS save you money?

We recently spoke with realestate.com.au about how the right window coverings can and will save home owners money.

Uncovered windows are responsible for up to 40 per cent of the heat loss from a home in winter, and up to 50 per cent of unwanted heat gain in summer.

A one degree fall in temperature in your home adds 10 per cent to your heating bill. Conversely an increase in temperature in summer adds significantly to the energy required for cooling.

Choosing the right window coverings will create an insulating layer of still air on the inside of the glass and this reduces heat loss through windows resulting in a greater control over the interior temperature of your home and significant savings on power bills. It works in the same way in summer to keep the hot air out and the cool air in. So yes our window coverings can and will save you money!

By choosing our curtains, you can preserve up to 20 per cent of the total heat in your home resulting in significant savings on your power bills. Curtains create a trapped layer of air between the fabric and the window, which results in an insulating air pocket. Studies demonstrate that curtains made from block out fabric can reduce heat gains by 33 per cent. Adding lining onto your curtains is also a must as it creates a second layer of trapped air and further insulation.

    curtains

The beauty of curtains is there abundance of both aesthetic and practical benefits. Aesthetically speaking they add softness and warmth to a room. Curtains shape and frame your windows, adding the illusion of height to rooms and the fabric creates movement and texture.

In addition to the visual opportunities they offer the practical benefits of curtains are endless. Curtains offer increased thermal and noise insulation, UV protection, privacy and room darkening. Curtains are the top window covering for energy efficiency so they are truly worth the investment and will save you money in the long term.

Our pelmets form a barrier that stops warm air that has risen to the top of the room from escaping over the top of the curtain or blind & through your window. Pelmets also stop air coming back through the glass in summer by trapping it under the pelmet before it gets into the room. There cant be enough said of the benefit of adding pelmets over your curtains or blinds to ensure your not wasting your money on heating or cooling your home. Without pelmets the hot or cool air will simply escape through the top of your window.

Our Whisper cellular blinds are the top blind product for energy efficiency. They are constructed using a fabric that is cellular / honeycomb in shape providing superior insulation properties. This unique shape traps air helping to create a more constant indoor temperature, keeping you cool in summer and warm in winter. The unique construction of our Whisper cellular blinds results in savings of up to 32 per cent on your energy costs. When lifted they also have one of the smallest stack backs available. This minimal stack back along with its cord lock operation creates minimal obstruction to your views and can let you allow in the maximize natural light.

Another popular product is our double roller blinds. They offer double the insulation; by having two blinds in one you have two air pockets to keep the cool air out. Control of each blind is separate so you can enjoy your window views and soft diffused light during the day and have complete privacy and darkness at night. Very handy!!

    double roller

Ensuring you buy custom made window coverings rather than pre-made window coverings is also very important. Custom made curtains and blinds are manufactured specifically to your window dimensions without any pre-fabrication or short cuts. This is crucial as it ensures that your window coverings are installed snug onto your windows to get the best possible light control, privacy and insulation benefits. Pre-made or ready-made curtains and blinds are most often poorly fitted and won't adequately cover your windows enough to properly insulate.

Sustainability Victoria also recommend this to help improve your homes insulation. A recent article from Sustainability Victoria identified how a poorly fitted curtain allows heat loss to occur, while a well fitted curtain combined with a pelmet significantly reduces heat loss.

AND lets not forgot awnings and outdoor blinds. Our Alpha Awnings for example are proven to significantly reduce cooling energy costs by keeping a standard home at a consistent and comfortable temperature throughout the summer months. Independent tests have shown that they offer energy cost reductions of up to 58%.
